My Foodie Adventures Izzy’s Fish and Oyster
I can’t believe it’s a year now since I went to Fort Myers, FL for weekend escape. This trip was done just before the beginning of the pandemic. My wife and I had a good time. Nice shops, food and scenery. Izzy’s was simply delicious seafood especially the Dolphin Sandwich!

Nostalgia Huffy Bikes
So growing up in South Florida, all the neighborhood kids had a bike. Yes, there were different levels of makes and models according to what you could afford. My parents could only afford bikes at a Jefferson’s, Zayre’s or K-Mart. The Huffy Thunder Road was in my possession as a gift. My sister was gifted the girly version of the Huffy Thunder Road–The Sweet Thunder!
It’s nice to see the Huffy Brand is still around!

Music I have been listening to this past week

This week, while listening to the local R&B station in South Florida HOT 105, a flood of old school jams have come into my radar. Check out some of the classics below:

Where are they now? The Fifth Dimension
Growing up in New Jersey, my Peruvian parents came into this country in the late 60’s and where hooked to the music of the time. Artists such as Johnny Mathis, Tom Jones, Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66, Burt Bacharach, and other albums were at my disposal. I would study the art work, lyrics and linear notes of each album. One group, comprised of 5 members with angelic voices and a sound that blew me away were the Fifth Dimension. These Vocal Group Hall of Fame winners dominated the late 60’s and early 70’s throughout the TV and Radio waves. The two 5th Dimension albums in my parent’s collection where Portrait and Love’s Lines, Angles and Rhymes.

It was a treat a couple of weeks ago while watching CBS This Morning to see the two founding members Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. are doing well. Some people may say their sound is corny but these music and songs are part of the sounds of my life growing up in Jersey. No electronic instruments just some good old fashioned instruments with a grand orchestra. Funny, I gravitate more to music than TV. Here’s a compilation of the Fifth Dimension’s Hits. Enjoy!

Nostalgia KISS member Paul Stanley
Growing up in 70’s, friends turned me on to KISS. I had their posters on my wall and loved their Kiss Alive 2 album. As you probably seen or heard they just completed a big concert in Dubai during the holidays. Now, coming up on March 19, 2021, lead singer of KISS Paul Stanley is coming out with a soulful selection of music from past Motown and vintage R&B music. He sounds great! Check him out with his “Soul Station”.

Music I have been listening to this past week

This week, I have been remembering an under-rated British band, a saxophone playing New Yorker and a collaboration with a Grammy winner, a FunkMeister and a future Grammy winner.

Where are they now? The Guardian Angels
So I was watching “Beat Street” and all of a sudden this film reminded me of the Guardian Angels of New York. The Guardian Angels were created by Curtis Sliwa to protect citizens because of all the rampant crimes that were happening in the late 70’s and 80’s in New York. So these Angels rode the subways and streets trained in citizen arrest. In 2017, author David Francis Blanc wrote a book, An Angel’s Tale, about his service in the Guardian Angels. Since the group’s inception, now there are chapters all over the world.

My Foodie Adventures Sebring Diner: If you are on U.S. 27 in Sebring, FL during breakfast time, don’t forget to stop at this diner. Here’s my short review.

Nostalgia Stayin’ Alive (1983 film) This past week I saw this Sylvester Stallone directed film. In this sequel to ‘Saturday Night Fever, set six years after the events in the previous film, former disco king Anthony “Tony” Manero (John Travolta), now age 25, has left Brooklyn and is now living in Manhattan, staying in a flophouse hotel while he works as a dance instructor by day and as a waiter at a nightclub at night, looking for his big break in the modern dance productions on Broadway. Originally, I saw this film in the theater and less than a handful of times on cable TV. I understand why a lot of critics hated this film but I liked it. Now, I am not going to get to the specifics on why I liked it here but I agree with what some IMDB reviewers thought about the film. Great soundtrack from the film.

70’s/80’s music I have been listening to this past week

This week, I have been all over the place with my music selection.

Where are they now? Cast of Pretty in Pink. So growing up in the 80’s, I was and am still a movie freak (now I pick and choose what films are good for my brain). One of my favorite directors at the time was John Hughes and his films because he had a connection with the youth of that time period. Now comes Pretty in Pink. To be honest, I have yet to see this whole film since it came out in ’86 but have seen bits and pieces of it throughout the years. Maybe it’s because…. I’d rather not say. Anyway, here’s a good article of where the cast are now since the film turned 35 years old last week.

70’s/80’s music I have been listening to this past week
Prince Jazz Funk Sessions 1977 Instrumentals WARNING: This is Prince in ’77 and has a smooth jazz sound fusion-which I love! Genius . . . I miss him dearly.

Where are they now? Cast of The Warriors (1979 film): Classic fictional film of how gangs were rampant in 70’s New York. This film portrayed them has characters from a superhero comic littered across the boroughs in NY. Basically, the story centers on a New York City gang who must make an urban journey of 30 miles (48 km), from the north end of the Bronx to their home turf in Coney Island in southern Brooklyn, after they are framed for the murder of a respected gang leader. I wish I could have seen this film on the screen but I have seen it hundreds of times during the launch of cable TV in the 80’s. Here’s a short breakdown about the cast and their website/social media presence:

Cleon, WarLord, leader of the Warriors played by Dorsey Wright.

Swan, War Chief of the Warriors played by Michael Beck.

Mercy played by Deborah Van Valkenberg.

Cochise played by David Harris.

Vermin played by Terry Michos.

Fox played by Thomas G. Waites.

Ajax played by James Remar.

Cyrus, leader at the Conclave played by Roger Hill is deceased.

Rembrandt played by Marcelino Sanchez is deceased.

Cowboy played by Tom McKitterick.

Luther played by David Patrick Kelly known for this famous jingle in the film.

D.J. played by Lynne Thigpen  is deceased.

Masai played by Edward Sewer is deceased.

Cropsey played by Joel Weiss.

Other things I found:

This site has it pretty down packed of the locations of where the film was shot. Here’s another one. This site even breaks it down to key scenes. Something to note: A Warriors series may be coming to Netflix according to this article. Don’t forget the short video they did back in 2015! Here’s a before and after surprise pic of Swan, Mercy and Ajax!

So as I noted in last week’s newsletter, I have taken the plunge to create a newsletter which I will send to you on Fridays on a weekly basis (oops! I know I said bi-weekly) and appear here on my newly named website: Preferences by Johnny Louey. After reading and viewing Khe’s recommendations on how to create a newsletter, it has inspired me to have one of my own. The topics of this newsletter will revolve around the highlighted topics below. Let’s begin:

My Foodie Adventures Finally, Chicken Salad Chick is in South Florida. By the end of this weekend, I am probably going to check out Hot Chicks-House of Chicken based in Pembroke Pines, FL. It has been recommended by NBC’s Today show and Yelp. Check out my review coming soon!

Nostalgia Well, as a music lover except for some country music, I love 60’s TV shows. One in particular was “It Takes A Thief” starring Robert Wagner. He played a sophisticated thief Alexander Mundy, who works for the U.S. government in return for his release from prison. What I loved about these episodes was the theme song played by Dave Grusin. I know he wasn’t the original music creator but he revamped it to make it funkier. Here’s a great playlist I found on the music of “It Takes A Thief” series that lasted between 1968 and 1970. Enjoy!

Apps to try out
Mailchimp: As you probably read in last week’s newsletter, I created/co-founded 2 newsletters the “Mighty News Feed” and “Communique” using Mailchimp. In the past 7 years, it has worked for me. It can help you market smarter and grow. Explore Forever Free Options as well as it makes it easy to create email campaigns, landing pages, and more. The free version is all you need to start but if you get the paid version it can be costly but have great features.

70’s/80’s music I have been listening to this past week
Sade
David Grusin, Lee Ritenour and Michael Franks live.

Where are they now? Lee Majors: I was thinking about this actor when I happened to come across his show on TV the other day. This Six Million Dollar Man actor looks like he’s doing well at age 81 and has a hottie for a wife!

Any suggestions and comments are welcome.

New Look! New Newsletter Launch! Preferences by Johnny Louey and 1st Edition of the Friday Extra

Hi ya’ll! I have changed the logo and name of this site. This change was to give my audience my preferences not only throughout Florida but the world. I hope you like it. Peace!

1st Edition | January 29, 2021

Finally, I have taken the plunge to create my first newsletter which I will send to you on Fridays on a bi-weekly basis and appear here on my newly named website: Preferences by Johnny Louey. After reading and viewing Khe’s recommendations on how to create a newsletter, it has inspired me to have one of my own. The topics of this newsletter will revolve around:

  • My foodie adventures (check out my Google Maps restaurant reviews), and foodie events around the great state of Florida.
  • Nostalgia: Hey, I grew up in South Florida ( here’s my favorite Facebook nostalgic page which I contribute at times) since the mid 70’s so there will be plenty to talk about. Over 80% of friends and family asked for a “Where are they now?” category (basically what has happened to the TV celebrities, music performers, and movie stars from the Generation X era) so I will have that on the newsletter.
  • Online/offline productivity webinars/events/apps/tools: In my initial survey to my friends and family, a big percentage of you have asked me to review productivity apps and review a variety of podcasts that revolves around business, health, lifestyle, and productivity.
  • Links: My favorite links I have found during the week relating to Florida, food, books, articles, health, faith, and productivity. Here are some sample topics I will present each week: Recipes from Instagram for busy professionals, a 15-30 track Spotify playlist from the ’70s to the ’90s, and online price specials in general from Florida small businesses.

I know it’s a broad range of topics but I will focus down to three once my readership gives me their updated feedback in the near future.

Disclosure: Please note that some of the links that I will be showcasing are affiliate links at no additional cost to you, I’ll earn a commission. Please note that I only recommend products and services I’ve personally used and stand behind. When you use one of my affiliate links, the company compensates me, which helps me run this newsletter and keep all of my in-depth content free of charge for readers (like you).

Thanks for your help Ladies and Gentlemen!

  • Back On Track Communique (A weekly faith-based career support newsletter)
  • The Mighty News Feed (A weekly Florida State Knights of Columbus and Council 12240 newsletter on what Knights are accomplishing in the great state of Florida)

Sign up, you may learn something from these 2 fine organizations. See ya in the next edition!
